Marshall Houck was a son of Henry Lafayette "Fate" Houck and Caroline Bowman. He was well-known in Lenoir, North Carolina as an ice and coal dealer for his Lenoir Ice and Fuel Company. He also worked in North Wilkesboro as the foreman of a foundry. In the 1930's/1940's they lived in the Carlheim Hotel in Lenoir, the former site of Albert Houck's hospital.

He was first married to Carrie Elna Spainhour. They had a child who died as an infant. His second wife was Martha O. Palmer.

He died of a heart attack at age 80.
