I met Dortha, “grandma Satterlee,” in about 1972. She was an interesting person, somewhat stern in nature, and she clearly loved her son, Zane (my father-in-law). Dortha had six children in all, and was a housewife. She was raised on a farm in Carmel Township, near Charlotte, Michigan. She and her husband, Orren, lived mostly in the city of Charlotte where he worked as a farm laborer, and later as a laborer for the W.P.A. In 1925 they may have lived in Lansing, Michigan, where Orren worked for the Olds division of the General Motors factory. In 1940 they lived on Sumpter St. in Charlotte, Michigan. From at least 1953 to 1965 they lived on Lansing Street, Charlotte, MI. Dortha’s husband died in 1965 and she died over 16 years later in 1981; she never remarried. They are both buried at West Carmel Cemetery, Eaton Co., MI.
