David was the son of David M. Carpenter and Tressa Hutchinson, who married on 10 May 1862 in Marshall Co. David first appeared with his parents on the 1880 Census, living in Green, Marshall Co., Indiana, where his father was farming for a living. Four siblings appeared with David Jr.-Mary E., aged 17, Adal, aged 15, Martha M, aged 14, and Carrie D., aged 11. David's uncle Byron, aged 23 was also living with the family and working as a laborer, likely on the family farm.

David married Mary Estella Davis on 21 Jun 1916 in Marshall County. The couple welcomed daughter Hazel on 30 Aug 1896, daughter Blanche in November of 1898, and daughter Olga Pearl in 1917. I found the family on the 1900 Census, living in Green Twp. David Jr. had become a farmer like his father. One-year-old Blanche was enumerated under the name Suvilla, which may have been her middle name. Stella reported that she had only had two children as of that census.

By the 1910 Census, the family farm was zoned in Union Twp., Marshall County. David was still busy with the farm and Stella still reported having had only two children. Hazel was 13 and Blanche was 11. That enumeration took place on 22 April. Sadly, Blanche died later that same year.

Before the 1920 enumeration, David and Stella welcomed daughter Olga Pearl in 1917. She appeared with her parents on the 1920 Census, living in Green Twp. David's mother Tressa, aged 76, was widowed in 1906. She appeared alone, aged 66, on the 1910 Census living next door to Bryon and Carrie Carpenter, likely her grandson and his wife. David and Stella's daughter Hazel had married Ernest E. Roahrig on 21 Jun 1916 in Marshall County, and David and Stella welcomed grandson Olen S. in 1917.

Sadly, David died the year before the 1930 enumeration in 1929 when he was 57 years old. Tragedy struck again in 1931 when Stella also had to endure the death of 14-year-old daughter Olga Pearl.

A family tree on Ancestry.com attributes 2 more husbands to Stella-married Christopher C. McGrew in 1933, and William Isaac Fernbaugh in 1946. When she died in August of 1946, she was laid to rest at David's side.
