Stella was the daughter of Christopher Columbus Davis (1848-1918) and Sarah Ann Rose (1852-1892) who married on 29 Sep 1870 in Maxinkuckee, Marshall Co., Indiana. She had five siblings--Levi Elton (1871-1938), John Harvey (1873-1960), Lawrence L. (1880-1969), Jessie Clyde (1883-1891) and Eddie May (1886-1969).

Stella, aged 1, first appeared with her family on the 1880 Census, living in Union Twp., Marshall County. Stella's father Christopher was farming for a living. Besides Stella, her parents, and older brothers levi and John, Stella's 70-year-old paternal grandmother Rachel Davis was living with the family.

By the 1900 Census, Stella had married and was living in Green Twp., Marshall County. She wedded David G. Carpenter on 8 Mar 1896 in Argos, Marshall County. The couple welcomed daughter Hazel on 30 Aug 1896, and daughter Blanche (enumerated as Suvilla) in November of 1898. David was a farmer, as was his father before him. Stella reported that she had only had two children. Sadly, Stella's mother Sarah had died young in 1892 at age forty.

When the 1910 enumeration came around, Stella and David were living in Union Twp., perhaps to be closer to Stella's widowed father Christopher. David continued to farm and daughters Hazel and Blanche were already 13 and 11 years old. Stella again reported that she had only had two children. That enumeration took place on 22 Apr 1910. Blanche died later that year. She was only eleven years old.

Before the next census enumeration in 1920, Stella and David's eldest daughter Hazel married Ernest Everett Roahrig on 21 Jun 1916 in Marshall Co. In 1917, Hazel and husband Ernest welcomed son Olen S. Across town, Stella and David welcomed their third child that same year, a daughter they named Olga Pearl. A year later, Stella's father Christopher died in 1918 at age 70.

On the 1920 Census Stella and David were back living in Green Twp. Besides Stella, David and 2-year-old daughter Olga, David's 76-year-old widowed mother Tressa was living with the family. David's father David Sr. had died in 1906. David Jr., aged 47, was still actively farming but he died nine years later, one year shy of the 1930 enumeration. He was only 56.

After David's death, Stella began working as a housekeeper for Jacob and Effie Cavender, a retired couple, both in their late sixties. Stella and Olga, aged 13, appeared with them, living in Union Twp. on the 1930 Census. The following year, Stella again had to endure the loss of a loved one when daughter Olga died at age 14.

Somehow, Stella crossed paths with Christopher Columbus McGrew, a well-driller living in nearby Liberty, Fulton Co., Indiana. Christopher had married Clara LaBounty on 16 Mar 1907 and they had had three children together--Glen, Anna and Sylvia. Christopher lost his wife Clara in 1932 when she died from complications from a severe cold. Christopher and Stella met and then married on 20 Feb 1933. In 1935, they were living in rural Indiana. By the 1940 Census, they had moved to Naples, Collier, Florida where they owned a home. Christopher was still drilling wells.

They must have decided to move back to Indiana or bought a summer home in Culver as when Christopher died of a heart ailment on 27 Jun 1944, his residence was given as 914 Wilkes St. in that city, a home they had only been in for two months before he died.

Two years after losing Christopher, Stella married William Isaac Fernbaugh in 1946 in Fulton Co., Indiana. She was 67ish, he was 72ish. William had formerly married Lou Janet McCoy on 25 Sep 1904 and they had had at least four children together--Earl, Robert, Carl and Grace. Sadly, the couple's happiness would have been short-lived as William died the following year on 27 Mar 1947 and Stella five months later in August of 1947. She was 68, had been widowed three times and had endured the death of two of her three daughters. When she died, she was buried alongside first husband David. Her second and third husbands were also buried alongside their first spouses.

Stella and David's daughter Hazel lived until the ripe old age of 87 and with husband Ernest had brought the joy of grandchildren Olen S., Darwin H. and Frances Mae into Stella's life.
