The Rev. James Lester Lea, 88, a resident of Old Fort, passed away Sunday, Nov. 26, 2000, in a local hospital.

He was a retired Baptist minister and was also retired from Hardwick Stove Company after 25 years of service. The Rev. Lea began preaching at the age of 18 and served as pastor for most of those years at Beech Springs Baptist Church, where he had been a member since 1942.

He was the son of the late Leach L. and Elizabeth Lea.

He was preceded in death by one brother, Evan Lea; and one sister, Anna Mae Ross.

He is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Verlie Mae Brock Lea of Old Fort; two sons and daughters-in-law: John and Marie Lea of Cleveland and Virgil and Carolyn Lea of Andersonville; one daughter and son-in-law, Margaret and Jack Sullins of Cleveland; four grandchildren and spouses: Tina and Mark Sonnier of Omaha, Neb., David Brian Lea of Sunrise, Fla., Benjamin Lea of Andersonville, and Capt. Curt Bradley and Gigi Prichard of Warner Robbins, Ga.; one great-grandchild, Anna Katherine Prichard of Warner Robbins; three brothers: Fletcher Lea and L.L. Lea Jr., both of Cleveland, and Edward Lea of Benton Station; one sister, Ruth Day of Cleveland; and several nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the chapel of Ralph Buckner Funeral Home with the Rev. W.L. Shipman and the Rev. Jerry Campbell officiating. Interment will follow in Benton Memorial Gardens with William F. Queen, Sonny Price, Doyle Nichols, Eric Brock, Jeff Brock and Stephen Mowery serving as pallbearers.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 9 this evening at the funeral home.
