Family Tribute

Margaret VanDevender (1922-2011)

Margaret VanDevender of Eugene passed away December 2, 2011 at age 89. She was born to Daniel and Emma Servais Adank. As a child she enjoyed having a pet deer. After finishing school she went to work for the George VanDevender family where she met her future husband, Gerald. They married November 18, 1941 in Trego, Wisconsin. In a week's time they left family and friends to start life together in Oregon. Their first home was in Austa where Gerald worked for a lumber mill. From Austa they moved and built a home in Noti. In the early 1950's they moved to Eugene. By now they had three daughters.

Margaret was a homemaker. She loved to cook and always had something baked for those unexpected guests who often stayed for dinner. Margaret enjoyed family first, then gardening, playing cards, camping and traveling. She had a fear of flying but overcame that when she and Gerald took a trip to Germany to visit a daughter and son-in-law.

Margaret loved parties. She expected big things to happen on her birthday since it was the Fourth of July. For her 80th birthday she was entertained by "Elvis" before a crowd of fifty family and friends. At the end of the day she asked, "Well, what are we going to do next year?!" She was our firecracker.

She will be deeply missed by her family. Survivors include Geraldine Wacker (Wally), Judy Bowne (Bill), and Gayle Thorsby (Gary), six grandchildren and five great grandchildren, and a sister Armella Grubbs of Wisconsin. Three brothers, Hilbert, Gaylord, and Wilbert passed previously.

A Celebration of Life is planned for January 7, 2012 from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. at Alpine Meadows, 3850 Riviera Street, located at the corner of North Clarey Street and Riviera, off Barger Drive.
