Lavina E. Bender, 84, of Russell, died April 29 at the St. Joseph Village in Manhattan, while being cared for by her family. Lavina was born Jan. 8, 1924 on the family farm in rural Barton County, the daughter of Floyd and Elma E. (Keil) Brack. She grew up on the family farm near Galatia in the Barton County area. She attended school in the Haig School District No. 81 and graduated from the eighth grade on May 24, 1938. She was very active in the Russell Lutheran Church and was baptized on March 2, 1924, in Otis and later confirmed in the Lutheran faith on June 20, 1937. On Nov. 9, 1947, she married Ruben Bender at the Bender Hill Lutheran Church south of Russell. They made their home on the Bender family farm located in the Bender Hill Community. From this union they were blessed with three children, Dianna, Duane and Ramona. Ruben preceded Lavina in death on Jan. 15, 2006.

Lavina was a hard-working homemaker and assisted Ruben in taking care of the farm. She enjoyed cooking, baking, quilting, tatting, knitting and sewing. She enjoyed gardening and also enjoyed canning her own fruits and vegetables that she had grown in her garden. She was an active member of St. John's Lutheran Church and was very involved in Martha's Circle. She was also a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary, Russell Regional Hospital Auxiliary, and a past honorary member of the Zeta Mu Sorority. In Lavina and Ruben's later years they enjoyed traveling the U.S. together on various bus tours and with their family.

Those she leaves behind are a son, Duane L. Bender and wife Margaret of McPherson; two daughters, Dianna Michaelis and husband Richard of Sioux City, Iowa, and Ramona Kramer and husband Vincent of Manhattan; a sister, Darlene Bender of Bella Vista, Ark.; and one granddaughter, Catherine E. Bender of Shawnee. She was also preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, Marvin and LaVern Brack.

A celebration of Lavina's life is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Monday at the St. John's Lutheran Church in Russell. Burial will follow at the St. John's Lutheran Cemetery in Russell. Visitation will be from noon to 8 p.m. today at the Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary in Russell with family present from 5 to 8 p.m. Memorials may be given to St. John's Lutheran Church of Russell and may be sent to the mortuary at 610 N.
