Francis enlisted on 13 June 1861 Co. D. 20th Regiment Illinois Volunteers (with his brother Joseph H. Malone). Fought in the battles of Fort Donelson, Shiloh, Corinth, and Vicksburg where he was wounded. He died at Jefferson Barracks in St. Louis, Missouri.
