Raymond Johanson, 97, died Thursday, Dec. 1, 2011, in Houston.

He was born April 17, 1914, near Fredericksburg, Texas, son of Charles C. and Grace Louise Striegler Johanson. He and Opal Melissa Haney Zeigler were married Feb. 24, 1957.

He attended school in Texas and at midpoint in the Great Depression, he made his first trip to Missouri and visited his father's farm at Bucyrus. He and his brother, Clayton, and headed for the San Antonio, Texas area, where they took a job picking cotton.

He joined the Navy on Jan. 8, 1934, and traveled to many countries. He attained the rank of Electricians' Mate First Class during World War II and served on the USS Texas, USS Hamilton, USS Blakely and the USS Barney. He took part in a USS Texas Olympic Race Boat winners in San Francisco, Calif. In 1943, received an honorable medical discharge.

While in the service he was baptized at the First Brethren Church in California.

He worked as a journeyman electrician in the Todd Galveston (Texas) Dry Docks. In 1944, he migrated to his father's farm in Bucyrus.

He and his wife, Opal, settled on a farm a few miles east of Houston. In May 1958, they purchased the place where he spent the rest of his life.

He was presented a certificate by the Department of the Army in recognition of 30 years of federal service on April 7, 1971, in Fort Leonard Wood. He spent many years as a public servant in times of war and peace.

He became a Christian in 1936. He and his wife became charter members of Soul's Harbor Pentecostal Holiness Church in 1972.

He was a member of the Houston Area Chamber of Commerce and received the Mancuso Award from the Army for being the oldest veteran at the 100th anniversary of the chamber. He was a member of the Ozark Baptist Church, where on Veteran's Day 2010 he received a proclamation from the governor for being the oldest veteran in Texas County.

He had many meals and fellowship at the Senior Center in Houston. He was a self-trained horticulturist. He planted pecan and pear trees, black berry bushes and took care of bees. He was an avid genealogist and used his computer skills to communicate with his family and friends.

He was a member of the Ozark Baptist Church. He lived independently on his farm with the help of his niece, Grace Lively, and her husband, Richard, and his nephew, Jack Johanson.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 45 years, Opal; his parents; and nine siblings, Leslie, Clayton, Ola Mae, Mary, Herbert, Nettie Nell and Allen.

Survivors include a brother, Milton Charles Johanson; a half-sister, Lillie Stucke Burger; 28 nieces and nephews; a stepdaughter, Betty Jean Powers; a stepson, William Estrel Zeigler; and many step-grandchildren, step-great grandchildren and friends.

Services were Monday, Dec. 5, at Evans Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor John Wisdom officiating. Burial was in Oak Hill Cemetery were under the direction of Evans Funeral Home.
