Opal Melissa Haney Johanson, 90, daughter of William Huston Haney and Mary Ellen Stricklin Haney, was born Aug. 2, 1911, in the Oak Hill community north of Houston. She died March 8, 2002, at Houston House.
She spent most of her life near Houston where she attended Oak Hill Grade School and Houston High School. Her love for Sunday School and church resulted in the surrender of her life to Jesus while a teenager at Oak Hill Community Church.
She married Estrel Fred Zeigler July 11, 1931. They had two children. Mr. Zeigler died from acciden-tal food poisoning at work. Mrs. Zeigler moved back to the family farm and became active in church, taking leadership roles as song leader and Sunday School teacher.
She rededicated her life Sept. 20, 1944, along with her children and they were baptized Sept. 9, 1945, in Arthur's Creek.
In 1949, she joined the Assembly of God in Houston but continued to teach and work in the Oak Hill Community Church where she lived. When her daughter went to college in Springfield, she went with her and shared off-campus housing for a year.
She returned to Houston and worked at International Shoe for a number of years. During this time, she taught Sunday School, led songs and helped whenever needed at the Assembly of God in Houston, where she met Raymond Johanson.
They were married Feb. 24, 1957, and purchased a small farm east of Houston. She was a wife and housekeeper, helping on the farm while Raymond worked at Fort Leonard Wood until his re-tirement June 1972. That year, the Johansons, along with a group of Christians, became charter members of Souls Harbor Family Worship, where she continued to teach Sunday School until her health began to fail.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Homer C. Haney.
Surviving are her husband of 45 years; her daughter, Betty Jean Powers of Tulsa, Okla.; one son, William Estrel Zeigler of Arnold; one brother, Howard E. Haney of Houston; one sister, Nellie Mae Fulks of Houston; five grandchil-dren and five great-grandchildren.
Services were March 12 at the Evans Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Samuel Powers officiating. Burial was in the Oak Hill Cemetery under the direction of Evans Funeral Home.
