MRS. ANTHEM MOONEY OF ALTON DIES TUESDAY
Mrs. Anthem Bates Mooney, age 87, died at her home in Alton on Tuesday March 24th, following an illness of several weeks. Mrs. Mooney was born in the state of Alabama in the year 1854, moving to this county at a young age. At the age of eighteen she was married to Joseph Bates and to this union seven children were born, five of whom survive and who are Mrs. Minerva Palmer of Alton, Mrs. J.H. Bryant of Pine Bluff, Arkansas, Lucas Bates of Bardley Perry Bates of Jackson, Missouri, Revel Bates of Alton. After Mr. Joseph Bates' death, Mrs. Bates was married to P.J. Mooney and in the home established by them, she raised a step-daughter, Mrs. Ada Tucker of Couch, who was loved and cared for as a daughter.
Mrs. Mooney has been a member of the Missionary Baptist Church since childhood, she was a faithful Christian and a devoted mother. Having lived in Alton and vicinity she was known and respected by all.
Funeral services were held at the Baptist Church in Alton on Wednesday, the 25th, Rev. J.B. Rose conducting the service; burial was in the Baptist Church cemetery under the direction of the Leo Carr Funeral Home.
