In 1837, Mary's father, Daniel Payne and her husband Needham Bryan (son of Thomas & Winifred) moved to Ouachita Parish, Louisiana. They, along with Matthew Wood and his sons-in-law John Taylor and William Cleaton Carr help establish Union Parish out of a section of Ouachita Parish in the year 1839. Father Daniel Payne passed away in Columbia County, Arkansas in 1861. Mother Elizabeth Dupree Payne died in Farmerville, Union Parish on June 4, 1868.
After Needham Bryan's death, Mary married William Heard Culbertson circa 1860 in Union Parish, Louisiana.
