Needham M Bryan was the son of Thomas Bryan (1780/90-1839) of Screven and Randolph County, GA and Russell Co. Alabama; and Winifred (1799-1870) of probably Washinton, Jasper, and Troup Co, GA, who died in Dale Co, Al. His grandparents were Henry and Honora Bonnell Bryan of NC, Screven Co, GA, and Russell Co, AL.

In 1837, the families of Needham, his father-in-law, Daniel Payne, Daniel's sister Hannah & her husband, Col. Mathew Wood along with Hannah & Mathew Wood's 3 sons-in-law, Judge John Taylor, Sheriff Wm Cleaton Carr and Henry P. Anderson were all instrumental in forming Union Parish from Ouachita Parish in 1839. The records of Union Parish are replete with their names in this endeavor.

Needham M. Bryan was the first Union Parish Police Jury member for Ward 5 (Downsville area) on 5/15/1839.

Needham was a lawyer and died suddenly on a trip to Baton Rouge on Parish business. A true shame his headstone is in such ruins, and his history unknown. He has a child buried in same cemetery, next to his mother-in-law, Payne.

Needham M Bryan's brother was Henry R. Bryan, at one time Union Parish Attorney. Henry married (cousin) Josephine Lassiter in Randolph Co, GA, in 1830. Henry R. Bryan died in Union Parish in 1852. We do not know the death date of Josephine, but she died not long after. Their two young children were raised by Needham & Henry's brother, Daniel Fox Bryan in Dale Co, AL by 1860.
