William Grant Kelley was the ninth child and the seventh son of Benjamin H. and Rebecca (Thorpe) Kelley. He lived in Kentucky, Indiana, Missouri, and Kansas. He married Anna Eliza Lollar on 9 March 1854 in Barry, Lawrence, Missouri. They had eleven children, named: John R.; Sarah Frances; Benjamin C.; Jasper Herndon; Henry Allison; William Emery; Jacob Franklin; Rebecca G.; Virginia Isabelle; Mary Louise; and Sherman Socrates.

The location of William's wife's burial has apparently not been determined. Anna Eliza Lollar was born 30 Jan 1836 at Gasconade, Gasconade County, Missouri. She died on 19 May 1891; this is said to have been at Gray's Point, Lawrence County, Missouri.

William Grant Kelley served in the Civil War, in the 14th Missouri State Militia Volunteer Cavalry, Company G, as a scout. This was disbanded and became the 8th Missouri State Militia Cavalry, where in Company L, he served as a blacksmith and a farrier. He also served in this capacity with Company I, Missouri Volunteers. He was honorably discharged on 12 April 1865.
