Obit: Mr. Samuel Sheriff, a highly respected citizen of Geneseo, died at his home on North State Street Sunday afternoon, March 17, 1901, at 2:30 o'clock after an illness of but a few days duration. The cause of his death was a severe attack of the grippe in connection with the infirmities of old age.

Mr. Sheriff was born at Derry, Columbia county, Pennsylvania May 21st, 1820 and came to Paris, Ill when about twenty years of age, later re-moving to New Boston. Dec 3rd, 1846, he was married to Miss Tabitha Eliza Willits, who died Jan 28th, 1848. A child born to this union died in infancy. He was united in marriage to his now mourning wife, Martha Jane Denison July 3rd, 1850, and together they have lived a happy and useful life for over half a century, being privileged to celebrate their golden wedding last summer. Their home was blessed with five children, all now married and settled in homes of their own, and honored and respected in their respective communities. They are Mrs. Aletha Jane Blackley, of Scranton, Iowa; Mrs. Viella Barker (Harker) and Mrs. Flora Fisher, of this city; Mrs. Sarah Elizabeth Wells of Kalona, Iowa and Charles Emory Sheriff of Davenport.

Mr. Sheriff was a cabinet maker and contractor and was engaged in business in New Boston until 1864, when he removed to Geneseo with his family. Here he has lived the life of a useful citizen, conscientious to the extreme, especially active in church work and not unmindful of his duties as a citizen. He united with the Methodist Church when still a boy and united with the Geneseo Church immediately upon coming to this city, his family being one of the oldest families present connected with that church. He was ever willing and always cheerfully did whatever duty was given him to perform. His cordial greeting to the stranger, his general amiableness at all times made him a man whom it was a pleasure to meet and to know. He was a neighbor, friend and citizen to be prized by the community of which he has so long been a resident.

Funeral services were held at the Methodist church Weds March 20th at 10 a.m., and were conducted by his pastor, Rev. C. W. Ayling, and his body tenderly laid away in Oakwood. Besides the members of his family from out of town mentioned above there were present Mrs. Charles Sheriff, of Davenport; Mr. Jonathan Blackley and children, Anna and Harold, of Scranton, Iowa; Mrs. W. McIntire and Mrs. Clelland McIntire of Reynolds, Ill; Misses Mary and Sallie Orth, of Monmouth, Ill; Mrs. Harvey Pronty and son, of Keithsburg, Ill.
