Walter came to Missouri on a wagon train in 1840 with his family. His father was a farmer and Primitive Baptist minister. They settled down to farm near the town of Paris, county seat of Monroe Co., MO. His father Rev. Thomas B. Greer quickly became leader of the Baptists in the community and established a church. He died in 1845, and Walter's mother returned to Virginia with the younger children, including Walter. He was listed on the 1850 census in Rocky Mount, Franklin Co., Virginia with his mother and siblings still at home.
Once Walter grew up, he returned to Missouri to join one or two older brothers and other relatives.
He married on 12 May 1859 in either Monroe Co., MO or Macon City, Macon Co., MO to Martha Elizabeth Craig.
I haven't been able to find him on the 1860 census.
Civil War - Walter C. Greer served in the Union army in the 32nd Missouri Infantry, Company B as a private, then in Company D in the new 32nd MO Infantry. He served with a Frederick Greer who was also in Company D.
In 1870, he was living with his wife and children near his brother William near Macon City, Macon Co., MO:
