Kitty went west to Monroe Co., Missouri on a wagon train with her parents and brothers and sisters in 1840. They lived in a frontier community where her father farmed and served the local community as a Primitive Baptist preacher.

Her father died in Missouri in 1845 and her mother returned to Virginia with their younger children.

During the Civil War, Kitty attended the Hollins Female Institute in Rocky Mount. There's an old family legend that once when the 37th Battalion Virginia Cavalry passed Hollins with bands playing and colors flying, Kitty led a bevy of girls in dancing around the campus to greet them.

Kittie B. Greer married on 2 Oct 1871, Franklin Co., VA to Zachary T. Wade, son of Henry Wade and his wife Julia. Some records give his name as Zackfield instead of Zachary or Zachariah. He was age 22, born Virginia, and she was 27, born Monroe Co., MO. It was a first marriage for both of them.

In 1880, they had three daughters and Kitty's widowed mother was living with them:
