The son of Rev. Thomas B. Greer and his wife Ursula Jane Webb. They moved from Franklin Co., VA to Monroe Co., MO, where Thomas died. His mother then returned to Virginia with the younger children.

He married on 2 Aug 1842, Monroe Co, MO to Mary F. Mason, who had been born in Kentucky.

"A certain Dr. Greer is said to have been the first physician to locate in the place, but it is said that his attainments were meager, and that his practice was still more so, and that a Dr. Lodge, who came in about the close of the war, is really entitled to the distinction of being the first practicing physician in the town."
