John Benson was born in Sweden June 5, 1858, and at the time of his death was 67 years, 5 months and 20 days of age. He came to America in 1880, and was united in matrimony with Elvira Pehrson at Shullsburg, Wis. Eight children were born to this union, three of whom preceded the father in death. Besides the widow the deceased man is survived by five children - Carl, Fobian, Austin, Elvin and William; one brother, S. P. Benson of Chicago, Illinois; twelve granddaughters and one grandson.
Mr. Benson had been a resident of the Fulton neighborhood for about 20 years, and was held in high esteem by all who knew him. He had been an invalid for the past three years, but was cheerful and patient in his affliction. In his early youth he became a member of the Methodist church, and was faithful to that religious denomination throughout his life. He had been a member of the Modern Woodmen of America for 29 years.
Asleep in Jesus, blessed sleep,
From which none ever wakes to weep!
A calm and undisturbed repose,
Unbroken by the last of foes.
Asleep in Jesus! Peaceful rest,
Whose waking is supremely blest!
No fear, no woe, shall dim that hour
That manifests the Savior's power.
