George Washington Allen served as a private in the Confederate Army the first year of the war. He was then elected Lieutenant, and in Nov 1862 was appointed captain and assistant quartermaster of the staff of Colonel J. J. Lillard, who by then was in command of the Third TN Regiment. Captain Allen was severely wounded in the battle of Morristown, TN in 1864, and suffered from his wounds the rest of his life. He was paroled 10 May 1865 at Washington, Georgia.

He married Maggie J. Irwin in 1864. They had at least the following children:
