END COMES IN CAR TO J. T. CRAWFORD
Dayton Banker Stricken on Mountain Highway.
Dead When Hospital Reached –Once Mayor, Long Leader in Rhea
Chattanooga Times Special.

DAYTON, Tenn., July 12 – James T. Crawford, president of the Dayton Bank and Trust company, died this morning while being driven from Johnson Bluff to Dayton. Mr. Crawford had not been well for several weeks and had been given a leave of absence from his duties at the bank that he might regain his health. With his wife and son, Robert Crawford, he had taken a cottage at Johnson Bluff for a month. Apparently no worse than usual, Mr. Crawford conversed with friends on his porch last night. He had some business to attend to in town this morning and had planned to go to the hospital for an examination as to his condition. When halfway down the mountain Mr. Crawford complained of feeling faint and fell against the car. He was pronounced dead when Mrs. Crawford and her son reached Thomison’s hospital with him. Mr. Crawford was the son of Henry H. and Ann Gillespie Crawford, pioneer Rhea county families. He was born Nov. 25, 1869 and had spent his entire life in Dayton and on his father’s farm, between Dayton and Washington. He received his education in the Rhea County schools and the University of Tennessee. He served as county trustee from 1904 to 1910. He became associated with the Dayton Bank and Trust company in 1914 as assistant cashier, becoming cashier two years later, serving in this office until 1926, when he was made vice-president, and was elected president in 1931. Mr. Crawford was mayor of Dayton in 1912, resigning to go to Mobile to spend a winter on account of his health. He was married in 1902 to Miss Susie Ayers, of Harriman, who died three years later, leaving two small sons. On July 23, 1912, he married Miss Rose Crawford, of Dayton. Surviving are three sons, Robert and Ayers Crawford, of Dayton, and James H. Crawford, of Chattanooga; three sisters, Misses Hannah and Adelia Crawford, of Dayton, and Mrs. Walter Miller, of Pennine. Two small grandchildren also survive. Funeral services will be held Sunday afternoon at 3 o’clock from the Methodist Episcopal church, south, the Rev. Mr. Cox officiating. Interment in the Buttram Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be R. W. Johnson, E. M. Williamson, James Frazier, Dr. G. V. Taylor, Glenn Woodlee, B. L. Morgan, Richard Rogers, Ben Block, Clyde Morgan and James Waterhouse; honorary, J. B. Swafford, M. Schild, W. E. Morgan, S. H. Reed, K. F. Johnson, Ed Downey, Sam Hutcheson, Lester Grimsely, W. B.
