Virgil E. Powers, 83, died Thursday, Sept. 22, 2005 at Presbyterian Manor of the Plains, Dodge City.
He was born Dec. 11, 1921 on the family farm near Bucklin, the son of Grant, Sr. and Alice Henning Powers. He served in the United States Navy during WWII. On June 5, 1943 he married Juanita Juttner at Great Lakes, Illinois. She survives.
A Wright resident since 1957, moving from Great Bend, he was a truck driver for the Right Coop for 29 years.
He was a member of St. Andrew Church and Knights of Columbus Council 1862 both of Wright.
Other survivors include: 3 sons, Kenneth and wife Peggy, Dodge City, Dale, Wright and Don and wife Cynthia, Wichita; 2 daughters, Peggy L. Schulte and husband Dallas, Wright and, Rita Harper and husband Don, Dodge City; 6 brothers, Dr. LaVerne Powers, OD, and wife Avon, Hutchinson, Grant Powers, Jr. and wife Bonnie, Bucklin, Richard Powers and wife Ellene, Greenwood, Missouri, Clarence Powers and wife Eileen, Scott City, Kansas, Duane Powers, Dodge City and Galen Powers and wife Kay, Sanford, North Carolina; 4 sisters, Geraldine Dohrman and husband Glenn, Ensign, Berniece Logan, Troy, Missouri, Gerva Hargett and husband Lynn, Kiowa, Kansas and Norma Ross and husband Stanton, Houston, Texas; 10 grandchildren; and 8 great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a son, Virgil Eugene Powers, a daughter, Maxine Louise Powers and a sister, Genevieve Cayton.
Vigil Service will be 7:30 p.m. Sunday, September 25, 2005 at St. Andrew Church, Wright. Funeral Mass will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at the church with Fr. Robert A. Schremmer presiding. Friends may call from noon to 5 p.m. Sunday at Burkhart-Ziegler Funeral Chapel, Dodge City. Burial will be in St. Andrew Cemetery, Wright.
The family suggests memorials to St. Andrew Church or St. Andrew Cemetery Fund in care of Burkhart-Ziegler Funeral Chapel, 1901 N. 14th Ave., Dodge City, Kansas 67801.
