Clara Edith Mallory was born January 22, 1898, at Benton, Illinois, the daughter of Eugene and Mattie (Robison) Mallory. She had five brothers, Nathan Horace, Theodore Everette, William Aden, Oren Cecil and Thomas Overton and four sisters, Eliza Violet, Fanny Lee, Dora Belle and Iva Mildred. Edith attended schools in Franklin County and graduated from Sesser High School. After graduating from high school she was a teacher in the area schools. Edith married William J. Pheiffer August 14, 1918 at Belleville, Illinois. Edith and William had five children, Julius Eugene, Marie Delores, William Donald, Raymond Laverne and an infant who died at birth.

At the time of her death Edith and William lived on the Ralph D. Kyle farm south of Monmouth in Lenox Township, Warren County, Illinois and attended the Fairview Center United Brethern Church. Prior to moving to the farm they had lived on South Eleventh Street in Monmouth and attended the Second United Presbyterian Church in Monmouth. Edith's car was struck by a train at the Ormonde railroad crossing while she was on her way into Monmouth to pick up her children after school.

Edith was survived by her husband William and four children, Eugene, Marie, William Donald and Laverne, all of them at home. Also surviving were three brothers, Nathan Horace Mallory and Theodore Everette Mallory of Sesser, Illinois and William Aden Mallory of Cartersville, Illinois, and three sisters, Mrs. Eliza Violet Quillman of Benton, Illinois, Mrs. Dora Belle Galloway of Sesser, Illinois, and Mrs. Iva Mildred Hart of Chattanooga, Tennessee.

Funeral services for Edith were held Sunday morning December 8, 1940 at 11 o'clock at the Fairview Center Church, in charge of Dr. M. B. Leach, pastor. A profusion of flowers expressed of friends, and those who could not find seats in the church auditorium were seated in the basement where a loud speaker brought them the service. Mrs. Orpha Raglan sang "Beautiful Isle of Somewhere" and "What a Friend We Have In Jesus," with Mrs. Clifford Jenks at the piano. The pallbearers were Willard Parrish, Harold Goddard, Glenn Howver, Lewis Long, Clifford Jenks and Royal Miller.

The funeral party then took Edith to Sesser, Illinois where her burial was on Monday, December 9, 1940 in the Mt. Pleasant Church Cemetery west of Valier in Franklin county.
