William John Pheiffer was born June 19, 1893 in Selma, AL the son of John Julius and Carolyn Doetsch Pheiffer. He had three older brothers, George, Frank and James and one older sister, Emma. William attended country schools in Jackson County, Illinois. He married Clara Edith Mallory August 14, 1918 in Belleville, IL. William and Edith had five children, Eugene, Marie, William, Raymond and an infant who died at birth.

William served in the U.S. Army as a cook in 1918. He farmed most of his life in Franklin, Henderson, Warren and Mercer counties in Illinois. After retiring from farming William worked in maintenance at Palmer College.

William requested that he be buried near his grandson Michael LaVerne Pheiffer who was killed in action in Viet Nam.
