"Seven Burned To Death In Nursing Home Fire - Four young people and three elderly residents of the McCoy Nursing home near Pittsfield died in a fire which destroyed the large frame building shortly after midnight, Wednesday morning. The fire is believed to have started from defective wiring. Three occupants escaped. The dead: Merle Nourse, age 70, no known address; Mrs Maude Stroupe, age 84, formerly of Clintonville; Mrs Nettie Clark, age 83, formerly of Youngsville; Jo-Ann Durlin, 16; Joseph Durlin, 14; James Durlin, 12; Thomas Durlin, 10. Patricia Durlin, 15, awoke in time to escape the flames but was unsuccessful in her efforts to save her brothers and sister. Mrs Martha McCoy, operator of the home, and Mrs Mary McComb, escaped. The children were orphaned nieces and nephews of Mrs McCoy. The fire was discovered by neighbors who called Youngsville firemen, but the flames were too far advanced for the hosemen to save the structure."
