Stockwell - Merle “Red” Griffis, 60, of Stockwell died at 1 a.m. Thursday in Home Hospital, Lafayette. Mr Griffis, manager of General Grain in Lafayette the past 22 years, was born west of Stockwell. He was former manager of the Stockwell elevator and former owner and operator of a restaurant in Stockwell. In 1930 in Lafayette, he was married to Mary Chaney who survives. He was a member of Stockwell United Methodist Church and an active member of Stockwell LIVE Club. Surviving with the widow are one son, Merle Jr. of Napoleon, Ohio; two daughters, Mrs. Joan Murtaugh of Stockwell and Mrs. Patty Horney of Rt. 1, Clarks Hill; two sisters, Mrs. Ruth Howe of Stockwell and Mrs. Jean Smith of Rt.2 West Lafayette, and two brothers, Bill Griffis of Champaign, Ill., and Dale Griffis of Lafayette.
