George G. Johnson also known as George Johnson, Jr. was born in Olive Township, Clinton County, Iowa to Gjert "George" Dossland Johnson (1828-1904) and his wife, Bretta Christensdatter Skeie Johnson (1831-1900). He was the 8th child born of their 11 children. Father and son were both known as "George", though their birth names were "Gjert", the Norwegian version of George. Nearly all the historical documents for George Jr. list him as George. One exception is the 1910 Minnesota census, which lists him as Gjert Johnson, a boarder on Main Street in the village of Perley.

His siblings were: Johannes dal Gjertson "John G." 26 Jan 1855-20 May 1933 (Soneva Larsina Larson Rosland 3 Aug 1850-9 Oct 1916), Berthanna (Britannia) 6 Apr 1856-9 Nov 1924 (Rev. Johannes J. Heie 11 Nov 1851-15 May 1936), Christen Olai (Dosland) 24 Jul 1858-4 Nov 1949 (Anne Louise Halvorsen 9 May 1860-30 Jan 1947), Lisbet Karine "Libbie" 30 Dec 1859-1 Feb 1932 (Hans P. N. Petersen 12 Dec 1859-6 May 1937), Christianna Gjertsdatter 27 Jan 1862-8 May 1913 (Erick Barney Charlson 12 Apr 1864-28 Nov 1939), Bertha Margrethe 24 Aug 1863-1865, Bertha Margaret "Berte" 10 Dec 1865-9 May 1952 (Samson Nels Petersen 21 Jan 1864-28 Nov 1939), Johana Maria "Marie" 7 Jul 1869-4 Jun 1902 (Albert Julius Kroshus 22 Dec 1864-3 Feb 1896), Leah 6 Jun 1871-15 Aug 1871 and Christian G. (Dosland) 14 Oct 1872-7 Feb 1945 (Anna Dorothy Lobben 20 Oct 1876-20 Jun 1962).

George came to Norman County with his family in 1882 when he was 15 years old. All his living siblings, except one who stayed in Iowa, came by train to Norman County with their household items, as well as their farm machinery and animals. They came as far as Felton, MN and walked to the Perley area.

The first winter the men stayed on the homestead in poor housing and the women and children went to live in a hotel in Ada.

George worked on the family farm and lived with his parents until their passing. He farmed in Lee Township. He did not marry.

He was a member of the Bethania Lutheran Church rural Perley. He passed away at Fargo, ND 8 Aug 1936 at the age of 68 years. Funeral services for him were held at the Bethania Lutheran Church 10 Aug 1936.
