Robert A. Moore enlisted as a private in Company G, 17 Mississippi Infantry Regiment(CSA), that was organized in Marshall County.
Pvt. Moore kept a journal of this experiences in the Civil War where his regiment served in Virginia. The journal was published under the title: "A Life for the Confederacy" edited by James W. Silver, published by Broadfoot Publishing Co.
Pvt Moore's journal is a great account of the life of a soldier in the war. He records details of visits to his regiment by pastors, wives, and people from Holly Springs and Marshall County. He records the death of his friends and the events of the war. He was present during the Battle of Gettysburg. His regiment was part of General Barksdale's Brigade when it made one of the most famous charges in the war.
Robert Moore was promoted to Lieutenant. He was killed at the Battle of Chickamauga, near Chattanooga, TN.
