U.S. Congressman. He graduated from Emory College, in 1847 and was member of the Georgia State constitutional convention in 1861. During the Civil War, he served as a Colonel in the Confederate Army. After the war, he was elected as a Democrat to the Forty-third, Forty-fourth and Forty-fifth Congresses, serving until 1879. He was again elected to the Forty-ninth Congress, serving (1885-87). Not a candidate for re-nomination, he was appointed by President Cleveland as the 3rd Assistant Postmaster General of the United States, serving (1887-89). After leaving politics, he engaged in agricultural pursuits until his death.
