John G. Gehring, 69, Atchison, died Tuesday, May 29, 2001, at his brother's home in Valley Falls. He had cancer.
Mr. Gehring was a master brick and stone mason. He worked in his father's construction business as an estimator and project manager from 1957 until he started J.G. Masonry in Kansas City in 1966. He retired in 1991.
He was born Oct. 30, 1931, in Hays, the son of F.P. "Doc" and Sue Wadsworth Bruney Gehring. He moved with his family to Atchison in 1938 and graduated from Atchison High School in 1949. He attended The University of Kansas.
Mr. Gehring was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Active Lodge No. 158 AF&AM, Scottish Rite, Abdella Shrine and he was past elk ruler of the Atchison Elks Lodge No. 647.
He also was a member of the Association of General Contractors of Kansas, Kansas City Builders Association and the Over-the-Hill Gang in Construction of Kansas City.
He supported Kansas Wildlife and Ducks Unlimited and was an avid reader of tales of the old west.
He married Virginia Louise Shearer on Sept. 8, 1949. She died Feb. 6, 2001.
Survivors include a brother, Ferol Gehring, Valley Falls; three daughters, Cheryl (Rich) Gentili, St. Charles, Mo., Tamara (Dave) Arthur, Stafford, Va., and Rhonda (John) Siebenmorgan, Easton; two sons, Greg (Dee) Gehring, Atchison, and Mick Gehring, Kansas City, Mo.; 15 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the First Presbyterian Church. Burial will be at Sunset Memory Gardens in Atchison where Masonic services will be conducted at the graveside. Visitation will be from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today at Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home in Atchison.
Memorial contributions may be made to the First Presbyterian Church, Jefferson County Friends of Hospice or the charity of the donor's choice, sent in care of the funeral home.
