Mariano de Jesus Armijo was educated at St Nicholas College in Santa Fe and St Louis University in St Louis. He worked as a farmer and sheepman in Albuquerque in the 1870's. He married 1st Dolores Elizabeth Chavez in 1875. They were divorced before 1888. He married 2nd Clara Wallace in 1889. They were divorced within five years and he re-married Dolores Elizabeth Chavez in 1894. He became a newspaper editor in 1897. He was a promoter of the Atcheson, Topeka, and Santa Fe Railroad in the early years and an agent for the New Mexico Town Company, developing New Albuquerque. He was one of the Planning Group that bought up the land north and east of Old Town to sell to the Railroad.
