Eldest surviving son of Henry Somerset, 1st Duke of Beaufort, and the Honourable Mary Capell. Paternal grandson of Edward Somerset, 2nd Marquess of Worcester, and Elizabeth Dormer. Maternal grandson of Arthur Capell, 1st Baron Capell of Hadham, and Elizabeth Morrison.
Charles married Rebecca Child, daughter of Sir Josiah Child of Wanstead, 1st Baronet, and Mary Atwood, in 1682.
Their marriage produced a son Henry, and a daughter Henrietta. His son would succeed as Duke of Beaufort, and his daughter became the Duchess of Grafton.
Charles died in a coach accident in Wales. His widow later married John Granville, Lord Granville of Potheridge, in 1703 and died in 1712.
