Louis Johnson Carickhoff, 80, of Elkton passed away Thursday, Oct. 20, 2011, at Rockingham Memorial Hospital.

He was born Feb. 20, 1931, in Edmeston, N.Y., and was the son of the late Earl Hammen and Cora Mae Sweet Carickhoff.

He graduated from Madison College (now James Madison University) and was a U.S. Army veteran who served in the Korean War. He taught geometry and physics for 30 years at Elkton High School and Spotswood High School. Louis, along with his father, was a mason. He built many homes in the area, and did a lot of volunteer work at the schools. He expressed his creativity through art and woodworking, and enjoyed being outside and walking around Big Run. He also loved dogs and cats, taking in many strays, even at a young age.

On July 21, 1962, he married Judy Lane Carickhoff, who survives. Also surviving are his children, Leslie C. Shifflett and husband, Kevin W., Louis J. Carickhoff Jr., Earl T. Carickhoff and companion, Stephanie Campbell, and Karla E. Carickhoff and companion, Jeff Gentry, all of Elkton; three sisters, Betty Livingston (Louis' twin) of Fairfield, Calif., Janice C. Eye of Elkton and Margie Beaman and husband, David, of Arroyo Grande, Calif.; two grandchildren, Ashton Drew Shifflett and Darren Craig Shifflett; two nephews and one niece.

A funeral service will be held Sunday, Oct. 23, 2011, at 2 p.m. at the Kyger Funeral Home Chapel in Elkton, with the Rev. Carrie Talbott officiating. Burial will follow at Eastlawn Memorial Gardens near Harrisonburg, with military rites by the Gooden Brothers VFW Post 9292.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. on Saturday at the funeral home in Elkton. Friends may also call the home of Earl and Stephanie on East Point Road, on Friday from 5 to 8 p.m. and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Elkton Emergency Squad, P.O. Box 152, Elkton, VA; the Elkton Volunteer Fire Department, P.O. Box 91, Elkton, VA 22827; or McGaheysville Fire Company, 80 Stover Drive, McGaheysville, VA 22840.
