Norwegian-American sculptor, painter and urban planner. He emigrated as an infant with his family to Newport, Rhode Island the following year. As a young artist, he served as an art instructor for Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney. Andersen traveled to Europe in 1893 to study art and eventually settled in Rome. A great deal of his of his work was done in relation to his idea of a "World City," a central world capital in which art would help man to achieve world peace and international harmony. His urban planning philosophy was outlined in his 1913 multi-volume work, A World Center of Communication, co-authored with Ernest Hébrard.

He is perhaps equally well-known for his close friendship with the author Henry James.
