Adam was born in Ohio and was only a baby when his father was taken captive and died during the Civil War. His mother re-married, and moved her family by covered wagon from Ohio to Missouri. Adam and his first wife married in 1888. Marietta Collinsworth, but they were only married four months when Marietta died. He married again to Anna Maria Bellamy, and together they raised five children.

Adam and Anna Wilt raised five children, Earl, Charles, Inez, Edna Belle, and Mary. Two additional children died as infants. Adam's father was also named Adam, however, he died in the Civil War.
