The son of Dr. Peter C. Barry and Jersey DeLong Smith, James served in the Spanish-American War. The primary issue was Cuban independence, and the war was fought from 25 Apr 1898 until 12 Aug 1898 in both the Caribbean and the Pacific.

James joined the army on 04 May 1898 at St. Louis, Missouri. He was mustered into Company L on 13 May 1898 at Jefferson Barracks, Missouri by First Lieutenant Letcher Hardeman, 10th U.S. Cavalry and was scheduled to serve for the period of 2 years.

After an early end to the war, James was mustered out in St. Louis on 31 Oct 1898 by First Lieutenant Ralph Harrison of the 2nd U.S. Cavalry. James was a private at the time he received his discharge.

He married Anna S. Narup on 15 Oct 1902 in Michael, Calhoun County, Illinois. They were the parents of 8 children.

James ran Barry Landing, a boat landing in Hardin, Calhoun County Illinois. This was where thousands of barrels of the famed Calhoun apples were shipped south on the Illinois River to St. Louis, Missouri or north to Peoria, Illinois.

At the time of his death, James was 55 years, 6 months and 23 days old. He was buried on 04 Feb 1929 and was survived by his wife, Anna, who passed away in 1971.
