Esther Jeanette Campbell was born near Bronson, Kansas, to William and Anna Augusta Fuhrmann Campbell. She lost her mother in childhood, to tuberculosis, and was left with a family of all brothers. Fortunately, she had many aunts and cousins nearby who were very close to her. Her father remarried to a woman she liked, but unfortunately her stepmother also died just a few years later. Esther attended one year of college, and became a teacher. She taught in Bourbon and Kiowa Counties in Kansas from 1912-1919.

In 1918 she married Charles "Mack" Womack, of Iola, who was in the army at the time. They had five children. Esther was often ill, first with tuberculosis and later with cancer, which eventually took her life. She was saddened to miss the funeral of her father, who passed away while her own house was under quarantine for scarlet fever and she wasn't allowed to leave.

She helped to raise her younger half-brother, Joe Campbell, after his mother died on his first birthday. Joe often went to school wherever Esther was teaching at the time. She was also a talented pianist, and taught many how to play.

She and Mack raised 4 sons and a daughter. She passed away after a long battle with cancer on November 6, 1947, at her home in Iola.
