In 1918 she married Charles "Mack" Womack, of Iola, who was in the army at the time. They had five children. Esther was often ill, first with tuberculosis and later with cancer, which eventually took her life. She was saddened to miss the funeral of her father, who passed away while her own house was under quarantine for scarlet fever and she wasn't allowed to leave.
She helped to raise her younger half-brother, Joe Campbell, after his mother died on his first birthday. Joe often went to school wherever Esther was teaching at the time. She was also a talented pianist, and taught many how to play.
She and Mack raised 4 sons and a daughter. She passed away after a long battle with cancer on November 6, 1947, at her home in Iola.
