At a time when many disable people were shut away, Joe managed to overcome his disability and go to college, where he won the Sigma Delta Chi National Scholarship award at KU in 1935, where he graduated with a degree in journalism, after changing his major from French.
He joined the local Masonic Lodge in 1930; he was a 4th-generation Mason. As an adult he primarily lived on a farm with his brother George, until they were no longer able to take care of the farm and both moved into the Masonic Home in Wichita in 1961.
Always interested in history, he wrote a family history full of fascinating information about the Campbells. He also wrote "Methodism in Bronson", a history of the Methodist church in his small town.
His interest in history and genealogy inspired similar interests in his nephews and nieces and their children.
