William and Louise Sweeney were killed by the May 26, 1917 tornado that hit struck Mattoon and Charleston. Mr. and Mrs. William R. Sweeney, residing near the Westfield river bridge, were both found dead in a ravine at the rear of their home. They lived in a two-room house, which was wrecked and piled in the ravine. From the positions of the bodies, it looked as though the couple had left their home and ran for the ravine with the idea of taking refuge there. They never reached there as both were blown into a deep hole.
