He was born about 1849 in Hudson, New York and died January 9, 1898 in Manhattan, New York at age 49 years. He had three sisters - Mary, Emma, and Grace Freeland Bogardus. He married a Julia Keith or Beach and had three daughters. When he moved to Manhattan he worked as a grocer. His father, Peter Bogardus, died in 1868 while he was treasurer of Columbia County.
