Peter married Mary Mellen Freeland, the youngest child of Leonard Freeland and Maria Van Deusen who had married at the Dutch Reformed Church of Claverack, Columbia County, New York in 1806. Peter and Mary married Sept. 30, 1847 at Hudson, New York, the Rev. Mr. J. Gosman performing the ceremony.
Peter and Mary had four children that I can find a record of. They were Leonard Freeland Bogardus, Emma Bogardus, Mary Bogardus, and Grace Freeland Bogardus. Grace was born a few months after her father's death. Peter was treasurer of Columbia County, New York when he died. He was a successful businessman of Hudson, New York and a short article appears in the New York Times at the time of his death. He also appears to have been a descendant of Dr. Everardus Bogardus, the second Dutch minister of New Amsterdam, and his wife Annatje Jans through their youngest son Peter.
