Viola was the first wife of Joseph William Butterfield (1861-1950). They were married on February 14, 1884 in Clinton County, Ohio and had two children together: Lena and Harry Butterfield. Viola was the only child of Joseph Benson West and Eliza Jane (Luckey) West. She had three half-brothers from her mother's first marriage to Albert West. Viola's mother died when she was two and she was raised by other families. She died at age 23 only a few weeks after giving birth to her son, Harry.
