Reason was the first husband of Serena Powell (Elliott) West Templer (1848-1924). They were married on February 22, 1866 in Clinton County, Ohio about nine months before he died. His wife would later marry Robert Templer and have five children. Reason was the son of Joseph Benson West and Sarah Olive (Grice) West. He was a Corporal in the 79th Ohio Infantry, Co. G. Enlisted on Aug. 23, 1862 and mustered out in Washington, D.C. on June 9, 1865. His regiment fought mainly in Georgia and participated in the Battle of Kenesaw Mountain. Reason died at age 24. He was the father of one son with Serena, Fred West.
