Hilda New Stieg, 88, of Fredericksburg, passed away Tuesday, Oct. 4, 2011. A graveside service will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 8, at Oakwood Cemetery in Waco.

Hilda was born in New York City, to the late Gustave Adolph New and Hilda Marie Lipp New. She attended Washington Irving Art High School and studied art at Pratt Institute in New York. She served as a WAVE in the U.S. Navy during World War II. Hilda married Edwin Lee Stieg on Jan. 6, 1945. After Edwin's graduation from A&M in 1948, they resided in Dallas where Hilda attended the American School of Commercial Art. After graduation she worked as a fashion artist for various department stores in Dallas. She lived in Venezuela, Libya, Australia, and Malaysia with her husband, who was employed in the oil industry, and she took a great interest in the culture of each country. Hilda enjoyed gardening and was an avid reader particularly of Egyptian history. She was a member of Northwood Presbyterian Church where she enjoyed Christian fellowship with many church friends.

Hilda was preceded in death by her brother, Navy Captain W.A. New.

She is survived by her husband of 66 years, Edwin Stieg, of Fredericksburg, formerly of San Antonio and Waco; son, Steven Stieg, of San Diego, Calif.; daughter, Dr. Donna Wasson and husband, Michael, of Fredericksburg; grandchildren, Claire and Anne Stieg, and Todd Wasson; nephews, Bill and Brad New; numerous other family members and many friends.
