Obituary-DEATH HAS TAKEN COVODE PIONEER-James R. Shields Succumbs, leaving a large number of descendants.
James R. Shields, aged 81, died at his home in North Mahoning township on Jan. 23, 1909. He was one of Covode's leading citizens and was a member of Co. B, 74th Regiment, P.V.I., during the Civil War. He is survived by these children: Mrs. W.A. Lewis (Nancy) and Mrs. F.E. Syphert(Emily), of this place; Mrs. William Lucas (Hannah), of Patton; Mrs. W.A. Baughman (Jane) and Mrs. J.C. Myers (Almira), of Punxsutawney;
G.W.(George W) and S.M. Shields (Scott Max), of Covode; Mrs. J.N. Heitzenrater(Elizabeth), of Trade City; Mrs. C.E. Stephens(Zillah), of Marion Center, and B.C. Shields ( Bert), of Braddock. The funeral was held in the Covode M.E. Church on Monday, being conducted by Rev. Sheets. Interment followed in the Marchand Cemetery.
