JOSEPH S. COOLEY: A native of Ohio, was born Dec. 28, 1828, of parents, JOHN and SOPHIA (DROSE) COOLEY, long ago deceased. Mr. COOLEY'S wife is JULIA A. HOFFMAN, daughter of PETER AND HANNAH (GOOD) HOFFMAN, deceased. She was born in Marion county, Ind., July 15, 1835, and they were married March 6, 1851, in Clinton county, Ind. By this marriage there are seven children, born as here given: MOSES, ABNER M., WILLIAM A., MINNIE M. dec., JOHN P., EDWARD A. and ROSILLA F. dec. Comrade COOLEY was by occupation a farmer when he entered the Federal army at the age of 32 years; he was enrolled July 27, 1861, at Indianapolis, Ind., as a private in Go. G, 26th Ind. V. I. He was wounded by spent ball in right shoulder at Prairie Grove; he was also thrown from a load of hay, injuring his back and hip. September, 1863, he was granted a sick furlough of thirty days; he took active part with his Regt. in the engagements at Prairie Grove, Siege of Vicksburg, Mississippi Campaign, and considerable guard and garrison duty; he was honorably discharged at expiration of time at Indianapolis, Ind., Sept. 21, 1864. His brother, MILO belonged to Co. G, 26th Ind. V. I. His wife's brother, ABNER was a member of Ia. Regt. Comrade COOLEY was successfully engaged in farming at the time of his death which occurred Feb. 13, 1877, in Tippecanoe county, Ind., from injury received in service; his widow has a pension and the family address is Clarks Hill, Ind.
