OKOLONA - Hansel Scruggs, 90, died Friday, Aug. 24, 2012, at his residence after a lengthy illness. A native of Sherman, he was born Jan. 10, 1922, to Charles Cecil and Lula Elizabeth Bolton Scruggs. He served in the U.S. Army Signal Corp during World War II and participated in the Allied Invasion of Normandy. For 35 years he worked with the Okolona Electrical Department. He was an avid vegetable gardener and enjoyed sharing his harvest with others. He was a longtime and faithful member of Okolona First Baptist Church, where he served a deacon. He was known for loving his family, church and ministering to others.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at The Jefferson Street Chapel of W.E. Pegues with Dr. Roy McHenry and Dr. David Eldridge officiating. Burial will be in Sherman Cemetery.

Survivors include his wife of 32 years, Mary Yancey Hood Scruggs of Okolona; one daughter, Gail Burton (Rick) of Friona, Texas; one son, Robby Scruggs (Pam) of Tupelo; two stepdaughters, Johana Inman (Newell) of Lambart and Elizabeth Booth of Jackson; one brother, Cecil Scruggs of Greenville, Texas; seven grandchildren, Clay Scruggs (Sheri) of Atlanta, Ga., Jim Burton (Heather) of Wynona, Elizabeth Garza (Noel) of Nashville, Tenn., John Mark Scruggs (Caroline) of St. Louis, Mo., Christine Norris (Sam) of St. Simon Island, Ga., Allen Inman (Amber) of Jackson and Cliff Booth of Jackson; and seven great-grandchildren, Hailey Burton, Sydney Scruggs, Josh Scruggs, Sam and Elizabeth Norris, Carter Inman and Issac Booth.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Eber Lucille Robison Scruggs in March 23, 1978; four brothers, Cliff, Cright, King and Robert Scruggs; and two sisters, Erma Finney and Mary Sue Holder.

Pallbearers will be Clay Scruggs, Jim Burton, John Mark Scruggs, Jimmy Clifton, Walter Holder, Johnny Campbell, J.W. Holder and Steve Robison.
