FRANKLIN LEROY CALKINS

Franklin Leroy Calkins, son of Burton and Augusta Calkins, was born at Rosebush, Michigan, September 16, 1891, and passed from this life at Beaverton, Michigan, about ten o'clock Tuesday morning, October 5, being fifty-two years and nineteen days of age.

His early life was spent in Rosebush where he availed himself of the school privileges and social life of the community. December 25, 1911, he wed Miss Lela Anderson of Clare. Their home was blessed by two sons, and two daughters, one daughter, Virginia, dying in infancy. The family resided in Lansing and Detroit for a number of years, and he then was in the west for about five years, returning to this locality where the remainder of his life was spent.

In 1941 he took Mrs. Daisy Hamm, of Flint, as his helpmate and companion and had their home in Wise township, Isabella county. They were to spend the day with a relative in Beaverton when he was stricken suddenly by death.

Those to mourn with the bereaved widow, are the two sons, Donald, of Mt. Pleasant, Lewis Lester, of Grand Rapids; one daughter, Mrs. Alethia Shayler, of Clare; two brothers, William, of Rosebush, Bert, of Detroit; three sisters, Mrs. Clarence Bader, Mrs. Nelson Irish, and Mrs. Vern Moline, of Clare; five grandchildren and many nephews and nieces and a host of life long friends.

The deceased had not been in good health for several years but looked forward to again being able to assume his responsibility. Although not a member of any church he was born into the family of Christ a number of years ago and as health permitted he availed himself of spiritual fellowship in the Loomis and Clare churches.

Funeral rites were held from the Thurston Funeral Home Thursday afternoon at two o'clock. Rev. Wesley Teale delivered the message and burial was made beside his parents in Cherry Grove.

Six nephews were pallbearers. The many beautiful flora offerings were a silent tribute to the esteem in which he was held.

Those attending the services from a distance were Mr. and Mrs. Burt Calkins and two sons, Douglas and Howard, and daughter, Ardis, and Mr. and Mrs. Lee Rovin, all of Detroit; Mr. and Mrs. Martin Kuleck and Mrs. Chas. Jila, of Grand Rapids; Mr. and Mrs. John Shayler and Fred Shayler, of Bentley; Mr. and Mrs. Gerald Reigle, of Harrison; Mr. and Mrs. Burton Bader and Mr. and Mrs. Froggit, of Mt. Pleasant; Mrs. L. C. Gardner and son, Tom, and Mr. and Mrs. Floyd House, of Rosebush; and Mr. and Mrs. Harold Rogers, of Lake. Clare Sentinel dated 10-15/1943 (Thanks, Tom Ladner for typing this obituary!)
