Cullen met Elizabeth Stanford at the University of Arkansas. He graduated with a degree in Business. He went to work at a Kress Store as a assistant manager in Tulsa. Kress moved him to Chickasha and to Guthrie. He also managed a store in Shawnee. He later bought a Ben Franklin variety store in Tulsa on 11th street near Wilson Junior High School. He then opened a second store on 11th and Yale where he expanded into a fabric store annex (Will Rogers Fabrics). He then built a third complex at 21st and Yale for the fabric store, and other small businesses which paid rent. He also purchased 10 and 50 acres of land between 61st and 71st and Yale.

He loved to travel and each summer the family took long automobile trips -- including one to Florida and over to Cuba; another across the lower border of Canada and down through Yellowstone. Most of the family trips were two weeks in duration, there was no air conditioning, and other extended family members were usually along.

His stores were always busy and always full to the brim with merchandise. He had specials to draw customers in. He gave away baby alligators with $10 purchases, leather notebooks with a certain dollar amount purchase, and baby chickens at Easter. He once bought a pair of armadillos to give away, but they kept escaping at night so he donated them to the local zoo (with a little family encouragement). He had one of the first black and white televisions installed in the store which attracted many customers.

He died of his third heart attack at the age of 44. He had Rhumatic fever as a child which left him with an enlarged heart, and he smoked.
