"Eckelson Pioneer Buried at Sanborn

The death of Nickolas Hoffert (Hoffart) 95 year old pioneer, was much felt in the Eckelson-Sanborn community. he came from Georgetown, Minnesota to this territory and in his youth was married to Veronica Diemert. The Hofferts had thirteen children. Four children and his wife preceded him in death.

He and his family lived for several years in retirement in Sanborn but after the death of his wife he spent the later years with his oldest son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Joe Hoffert, who live on the home farm.

He enjoyed fairly good health until a few days before his death when he suffered an injury in a fall. Funeral services were conducted from Sacred Heart church on Thursday morning, September 24, with Rev. G. H. O'Donohue officiating at a solemn requiem mass, assisted by his brother, Father Aloysius O'Donohue of Lisbon and Father Pat O'Connel of Lidgerwood. Father Aloysius O'Donohue who was pastor at Sanborn formerly and knew the deceased preached the sermon. Mrs. Ed. Altringer played the requiem mass and funeral arrangements were by Hub Peterson of Valley City.
